savidge is at the john muir medical center with an update on the officer's condition. >> reporter: i just spoke a short time ago with the chp spokesperson who told me that wounded officer's family members and fellow officers have remained here at his bedside throughout the my. he's in icu here and at last check does remain in critical condition. the chp identified the officer as 37-year-old kenyon youngstrom. colleagues say he's a husband and father of four. the chp says he's also a seven- year veteran of the force. he was shot by a driver during a traffic stop in alamo yesterday. a spokesman tells me the chp cannot release a whole lot of information about his injuries. youngstrom's family is asking for everyone's prayers as doctors do what they can to savely life. >> this is a very difficult time for officers. >> we're an extended family. officer thoughts and prayers are with the family. >> reporter: we're told that officer kenyon youngstrom is a former army reservist who began his career right here in contra costa county. he moved to a different patrol area for a different time and had

they needed help and crews then rushed to the scene. both taken to john muir hospital. the suspect died there. >> this is the tail end of the morning commute. there was a lot of traffic going southbound. and this happened and a number of eye witnesses remained on scene. >> investigators from numerous agencies and district attorney gathered evidence. investigators say a deer visible on the freeway from sky 7 was not hit by stray bullets they say motorists spotted animals in the commute. >> you can see that southbound lanes on 680 are still closed as investigateors poured through evidence. ask traffic on the northbound lanes have been opened for a while. and the traffic is moving along. now, i just want to point out one thing. you may have noticed that from sky 7 hd video, the suspect's car, the jeep, was parked in in back of the chp patrol car and normally an officer stops in back of the car so there are a lot of unanswered questions but we've learned that the patrol car does have a dash camera. that video may help investigators. >> and abc 7 news was able to obtain a recording of the communic

and prayers are coming to john muir medical center where officer youngstrom is on life support. members of his family, officers from the chp and extended family have been keeping vigil here at a hospital all night long. youngstrom was shot yesterday morning by the driver of a jeep that was pulled over on 680. you're looking at cellphone video from a witness who saw the moments after the officer was shot. a lot of the video is too graphic show on television. another officer opened fire on the jeep driver who later died from his injuries. the witness says he saw the second officer shoot up to 10 times shattering a window >> i saw when the cops started shooting the guy in the jeep and as soon as he shot the guy in the jeep, he ran to the police car and i guess he called for backup. >> in that video we can see to chp cars. we understand youngstrom was driving the car in front of the jeep. a lot of questions this morning about who is driving that sheet. it was registered last to a person in a point. the owner apparently couldn't afford towing fees and apparently left it in the hands of a towing yar

the officer and the suspect had been taken to john muir medical center in walnut creek and cate caugurian is at the trauma center right now. >> well, unfortunately we do not have much of an update at this point in time, they're keeping the media at a distance. officers are staying tight- lipped about the condition of both the officer and the suspect involved. we know that the injured officer is a male, but what i can tell you is that i have seen strong law enforcement presence and at last count there were six police cars including chp motorcycles, in the area staged outside it, they've been coming and going and we have video of that ambulance arriving, chp's reports the officer and suspect are in serious condition, we do not know the extent of the injuries, a spokesperson says that this investigation is ongoing. >> right now at this time, the investigation is ongoing, we will not release any permission to the media and i do not know when we will release that. >> you cannot confirm that your officers here? >> i can confirm that the officers here but that is about all. >> no word, basically

this evening. the officer is still at john muir medical center. dan kerman is joining us live from walnut creek with details on what we now know about this shooting. >>dan: we know the identity of the suspect but we do not know his motive. here is a video to show you who the suspect is. the suspect was shot and killed by the other police officers. his name is christopher lasik. he was the one driving the jeep wrangler and a second officer, not the one who was shot, pulled over. we are finding out that he pulled over because he could not read the license plate. the officer who was shot was the first to approach the vehicle. >> officer youngster approach to the jeep of the driver's side and made contact. looking at the-camera video, it shows that the officer and a lacy had a short conversation. then, without any warning, lacey pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the head. his partner was approaching from the rear heard the gunshots and saw his partner goes danforth, he drew his own service weapon and shot at the deep strikingly secretly. at this point, as far as a motive, where he shot the
